Kevin Cronin, lead singer for REO Speedwagon, spent some time with LAKings.com after he sang the national anthem at a Kings game this past January.
He answered the following questions about hockey/the Kings, sports, the music industry and his long and successful career.
Q: You performed the National Anthem with your wife at the Kings game on January 9 at STAPLES Center. Can you talk about the experience?
A: I am an avid sports fan. I got into music because I was too short to be good. Not only was I short but the word uncoordinated comes to mind. Still I was a closet point guard in my mind I was going to be a point guard, shortstop, you name it. But really I have so much respect for pro athletes, just the level of talent, level of dedication, level of hard work these guys do. Any time you're watching a guy or girl who makes it to the pros, whatever sport it is, whether it's hockey, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, you watch someone do that thing when they get to the top of their game, and it's just a thing of beauty. I can't get enough of it. So the secret is that the main reason we like to sing the anthem is it gets us into the game. It is one of the perks of our business.
Q: In talking to you before the interview, it is clear you and the Kings go back a number of years, right?
A: Back in the day, when the Kings used to play in the Forum, that was a special time for us because we used to perform at the Forum and I was a Senate Seat Holder so I was at the Lakers games and Kings games and the concerts whenever we were in town. Now that I'm a dad, I've got three little kids and we live a little farther away so I don't get in here as often, but I always love to see a hockey game and I love to see the Kings live and in person. I brought my 12 year old twin boys, and we came to a Kings game I think two years ago. We got here for the January game and had dinner up in the Lexus Club and it was beautiful. The Kings treated us great and they were looking over the balcony watching the guys just doing the skate around. I saw my sons and their jaws were just hanging down. You watch the game on TV and it's exciting, but boy, when you see it live and in person, there's nothing like seeing the guys doing their thing. I get a kick out of it.
Q: Everyone's got their favorite sports moments, athletes, etc. For you, what comes to mind?
A: I was born and raised in Chicago, so when I think of going to see live sports, we lived on the South side so we were White Sox fans at the old Comiskey Park, in left field, there was a hot dog stand. It was kind of built behind the left field wall, and that part of the wall was kind of like a chain link fence, so we would buy 75 cent tickets that were so far away you could barely see the game, but then we'd go down to the hot dog stand and Minnie Minoso was the left fielder for the Chicago White Sox and me and my buddies would go down there and say, 'Hey Minnie, how you doing man?' and he would turn around and wave to us. I just remember being eight or nine years old when they won the pennant in 1959 so when I see my boys, that's why I like to bring them to the hockey game, to see the Lakers play. Sports have just been a part of my life that has been such a good thing for people, for kids learning to play on a team, for spectators. Professional sports just bring people together. I'm just a fan, what can I tell you?
Q: As we begin to transition to music, a lot of people who follow sports collect things. I would think a lot of people in your business collect things. Do you collect sports stuff and/or music stuff from over the years?
A: Yeah my gym at home is a little sports museum. I've got my Lakers basketball with Magic and Kareem and Worthy on it, and right next to it my Celtics ball with Bird and McHale and those guys. A John McEnroe tennis racket, a couple of Kings sticks from when Bernie Nicholls and those guys were on the team. I'll tell you, one of my great sports moments, I was sitting in the press box after singing the national anthem at a Cleveland game and we were sitting right up in about the third deck above home plate, and it was open, it was below the net and I swear I was sitting right along the fence, and of course you're always hoping to catch a foul ball. I was sitting up there and Albert Belle is up to bat. He's having this long, long at bat and he's just fouling off balls. It was a big game and he hit a foul ball and it came straight backwards and you know how when you're sitting in the stands and a foul ball is coming close to where you are, even if it's not coming that close to you, but your adrenaline is still going and you're thinking maybe I’m going to get this? I swear I sat there, put my right hand up, the ball reached its apex and dropped right into my hand. It didn't even sting it was like Albert hit it to me.
Q: Last July you released a 30 year disc set. Is it hard for you to imagine 30 years have come and gone when it comes to your successful career?
A: Well it doesn't feel like 30 years at all, and I'll tell you, I always like to look forward, I’m not in to looking backwards and a lot of anniversaries have come and gone. And for some reason the Hi Infidelity 30th Anniversary Edition kind of struck a chord with the whole band and we thought that for some reason the vibe was ‘lets embrace this' because we thought about how our lives changed and I can divide my life into what happened before the Hi Infidelity record and what happened after the Hi Infidelity record because 1981 was such an amazing year for us so we just figured that we should really get into this one so that's why we really put out the double disc commemorative CD. We then performed songs on the record, probably seven or eight songs off that record every night. I'll tell you, though, we are just so fortunate that people just took that music that we made in the late 70s and through the 80s and it just never really went away. People use it in movies, and product commercials, and TV shows, and rock radio plays us. We're just so fortunate that we’re still touring. We're going to be out on the road soon with a big show and it's just, let's put it this way, and really lucky guy.
Q: During the making of those songs back then, did you have a sense as a singer/songwriter that when you were together and recording it that you really were on to something special? Or did the success come out of nowhere in essence?
A: With every record we wouldn't be in the studio unless we thought we had songs worth sharing and were special. So every time you go into the studio you go in with that feeling, but usually sometime during the recording, as things are coming together, you go 'Wow, that sounds pretty good, other people might catch on to this.’ But by the time we released the Hi Infidelity record we were feeling our own. But you still never know, you can make a really good record, but that doesn't mean that the stars are going to be aligned so you can have that special thing that happens, just momentous when things start going and word of mouth starts going. I mean we sold six million records in one year back then and then we had 10 records that no one had heard of before and then they started selling. It was a big year, all of our Rock N' Roll dreams came true, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. It was pretty amazing.
Q: The music industry right now, what do you like about it?
A: Well, the industry kind of got lost for a few years because everything changed with the digital revolution and iTunes and I think it's great because I'm all about getting people to hear my music. And luckily I don't have anything to do with the business side of it, I just write songs and make records and it's like I don't care how people hear it as long as they hear it. But I think the business part of it went through a big transition. Now I think people are getting it, people are understanding it and young bands have so many different opportunities now with the Internet and all to get their music across, and I believe good music will always find it's way into people's hearts and you just can't be intimidated by the new technology. Just embrace it and ride the wave as long as you can. Q: You have written and/or recorded hundreds of songs. For fun, how do you remember all the words to them? A: There are times during a show when our guitar player will be playing a solo, and I'll be back there grooving, and as I'm walking up to the microphone my mind will be blank and I have no idea what's going to be happen. I walk up to the mic and I open my mouth and somehow magically the words come out.

Classic rock band REO Speedwagon's concert in the MACC's Castle Theater on Sunday, November 27 at 7:30 p.m is rapidly approaching.
REO Speedwagon's music is the classically loud, fast, and adrenaline-pumping old-school rock that has survived decades. The band has taken advantage of music technology over the years, especially in the 1980s, but they continue to deliver their signature sound to audiences globally every year.
The original REO Speedwagon was formed in Champaign, Illinois in 1967 and has since changed band members several times. The group currently consists of five members, Neal Doughty (keyboards, organ, piano, synthesizers), Kevin Cronin (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, pian0), Bruce Hall (bass guitar, vocals), Dave Amato (lead guitar, banjo, dobro, backing vocals, 12 string guitar), and Bryan Hitt (drums, percussion).
The band is best known for their chart-topping hit album "Hi Infidelity," released in the 80s. Since their debut decades ago, REO Speedwagon has sold 22 million albums in the US and 40 million worldwide.

11/12/2011 - REO Speedwagon keeps on rollin' at Penn's Peak

If there was any question about whom classic radio rockers REO Speedwagon is targeting as its audience these days, the start of its concert Thursday at Penn's Peak cleared it up.
The band opened with six straight songs from its biggest-selling-by-far album “Hi Infidelity,” released in 1980. It played just two songs newer than that (none less than 24 years old), eight from the 1970s and one that was 40 years old.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. The near-sellout crowd certainly enjoyed them perhaps because, largely middle-aged, they were precisely the crowd REO is targeting these days.
But it was more than that. A lot of the songs in the 15-song, 90-minute set -- especially the hits -- are still very good. And the band played them with a freshness, authenticity and energy that belied their age. The fact that REO has embraced its classic rock status doesn’t mean its music has diminished at all.
The show started with the chronologically first two cuts from "Hi Infidelity." The opening "Don't Let Him Go" perfectly captured the wall-of-sound '80s vibe, and the voice of singer Kevin Cronin wearing glasses and with a shock of bleached hair -- was well-preserved.
And while "Keep On Lovin' You" was great Dave Amato’s guitar was spot-on you have to question a band playing its biggest hit (and only platinum-seller) as the night's second song.
But Cronin explained the run of "Hi Infidelity" songs by saying, "Guess what? It's been, unbelievably, 30 years" since the release of the nine-times-platinum disc (actually, Nov. 21 marks 31 years). "So we're going to play a whole bunch of songs from 'Hi Infidelity.' Sing along; have some fun."
What followed was a microcosm of REO's career: Its hits are great, but it had just five Top 15 songs in its long run at the top (one of which, "Keep the Fire Burning," they didn’t play Thursday). The rest of its songs, while still entertaining, were far below the quality of those hits.
So when bassist Bruce Hall sang "Someone Tonight" or Cronin waved in grand gestures on "Tough Guys," they did well, but the audience was clearly waiting for songs such as "Take It On the Run" with which they sang along (and finished) as the band's three guitarists lined up at the front of the stage.
"Keep Pushin'" was energetic ("We stand before you tonight with one intention to party!" Cronin told the crowd). "That Ain't Love" which Cronin sang alone on acoustic guitar -- was stripped-down and intense. And "Son of a Poor Man" was tight.
But the crowd reacted far better to "Can't Fight This Feeling," with Amato again nailing the guitar solos and Cronin singing well.
And not all of the deeper cuts held up that well. The 40-year-old song, "Golden Country," was clunky and outdated (but got a big cheer, anyway), and so was "Back on the Road Again," with its too-long solos and Hall again singing.
Cronin connected with that more mature crowd, saying Penn's Peak is "perfect for us, we love it," giving a shout-out to Nazareth-based Martin Guitar ("Every time you play a Marin Guitar, you fall in love," he said before playing one on "That Ain't Love"), and he noted his recent 60th birthday, saying "It's how you feel we don't have to get old." His energy level and voice which flagged a very few times on the night showed that.
And he also joked about the crowd's shouted song suggestions: "Requesting songs you know we don't know how to play. Besides, 'Come Sail Away' is a Styx song," he said before jokingly singing a few bars in a falsetto.
And they cemented that connection with "Time for Me to Fly," Cronin playing a long intro on a 12-string guitar that drew cheers of recognition. The crowd sang along and waved its arms. And then they closed the set with an 11-minute "Roll With the Changes," Cronin briefly playing keyboards for the only time in the night.
Then, as the encore, they played "Ridin' the Storm Out," a 34-year-old cut. But the title was perfect for REO Speedwagon as a band, and for the audience it's targeting these days.

Museum Hosted 3rd Annual Guitar-Pull at Los Angeles Club Nokia at L.A. Live

LOS ANGELES, California, September 15, 2011 Zac Brown looked across at the two Country Music Hall of Famers and two veteran rock stars who shared the Club Nokia stage with him as part of the September 13 All for the Hall Los Angeles fundraising concert. He then modestly suggested that he didn't belong in such esteemed company.

More than two hours later, however, Brown's powerful performances proved him wrong, as his songs fit nicely alongside those of Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon, Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, and Emmylou Harris. When Brown finished a solo acoustic version of his song "Free," in which he broke into Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic" in the middle of the song, the other four stars smiled and applauded.

"Zac, you're the man," screamed a fan from the balcony. Harris, from three stools away, looked at Brown admiringly and simply stated a reverent, "Thank you."Cronin, who was next in line as the five singer-songwriters took turns performing songs with just acoustic guitar accompaniment, added, "I remember buying Zac's first record and thinking, Here's a young man playing songs that Vince, Sheryl, and I can relate to, because it's similar chord structure and similar storytelling." But then, man, you take the songs, and you just take it to a whole new level."

is quiet humility showing, stammered a bit and said, "Me, being kind of the new guy, it's just an honor being up here with all you people."

That exchange typifies what makes the annual All for the Hall concerts such one-of-a-kind experiences. The five songwriters come from different generations, different genres, and different backgrounds from across the United States. Yet this intimate concert done as a Nashville-style guitar pull, with all the performers lined up across the stage at once, playing a song at a time, then moving to the next also demonstrated a spirit of creative unity. Most of the time they joined in with each other, singing harmony, or adding their guitars. Gill, in particular, offered lead guitar licks to nearly every performance.

The All for the Hall concerts don't feature a set list, and the performers often decide what to do on the spur of the moment, depending on what others have just performed, or to fit the mood they're in when their turn comes around. "You'll hear some great songs, possibly some new songs, because we don't really know which songs they'll do, but then neither do the songwriters," explained Kyle Young, director of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, in his opening remarks.

That foreshadowing proved true when Zac Brown told a story about growing up hiding behind his guitar, which became his constant companion. After Brown performed "Martin," about his favorite instrument, each of the others told stories about their guitars and chose appropriate songs.

Cronin told of getting beat up by young hooligans simply for walking down the street carrying a guitar case, until the Beatles came along. "Then the same guys who beat me up wanted to form a band with me," he said with a laugh. He played "Music Man," a song he wrote after being roughed up, about how he wouldn't let others dissuade him from his devotion to becoming a singer and songwriter. The song appeared on REO's second album, the band's first featuring Cronin as lead singer.

Harris told of the early Gibson guitars she owned, including the one in her hands at that moment, which was the same guitar she took to California when she first went out there in the early 1970s at the invitation of Gram Parsons. The guitar got kicked in during transport, but Harris later had it repaired, although it still shows signs of the damage nearly forty years later. She then performed "The Road," an autobiographical song she wrote about Parsons that opens Harris's most recent album, 2011's Hard Bargain. (Harris and Crow earlier had performed Parsons's "Juanita," a song the two recorded as a duet on the album Return of the Grievous Angel: A Tribute to Gram Parsons.)

Gill explained how, from an early age, he invested in guitars rather than buying homes or fancy cars. He revealed that he lost 50 guitars, 60 guitar cases, and 30 amplifiers in the May 2010 floods in Nashville, then he performed "This Old Guitar and Me," from his 2003 album Next Big Thing.

Crow continued the theme of broken or ruined guitars, relating how thieves broke into a rehearsal space in Missouri right before she and her band left for their first national tour in 1993 as opening act for the BoDeans. The vandals took all the electric guitars and keyboards, but left her acoustic Gibson on the floor, its headstock broken. She too had it repaired and still owns it. She then played her 1996 hit, "If It Makes You Happy," which she said she wrote on the repaired guitar.

The concert opened with Gill performing "Bartender's Blues," a George Jones hit, written by James Taylor, which Gill dedicated to Jones, who turned 80 years old the previous day. Setting a tone for the show, all four other writers joined in on harmony on the choruses.

Diversity has become a hallmark of the All for the Hall concerts, which have always mixed generations and genres, showing the connection between country music and other popular music styles, while also making the point that, when stripped to bare essentials, a good song is universally powerful no matter what label is put on it.

Cronin underlined that fact in his spoken comments. Initially invited to perform one song as a guest of the evening, he joined the guitar pull lineup instead. Cronin recognized, though, that his appearance might surprise some people. "When I got wind of the fact that I was being considered to be invited to this event, I was thinking to myself, "The Country Music Hall of Fame and iconic figures like Emmylou and Vince, and of course Sheryl who I'm a huge fan of," so I thought, "These guys must think I'm the singer from Diamond Rio. What the hell am I doing here?"

But Cronin, when starting out in the 1960s, came to Nashville to write songs before joining REO Speedwagon. The Illinois-based band recorded their second album, R.E.O. / T.W.O., in 1972 at Columbia Records studio on Music Row. He performed one of the band’s biggest hits, "Keep on Loving You," as well as lesser-known album cuts, such as "In My Dreams," one of the favorite songs of his wife, who was in the audience.

Museum director Young used the occasion to speak of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s current expansion plans, which will take the museum to 350,000 square feet from its current 138,000 square feet. He explained how the expansion would add exhibit and archival space, a new 800-seat theater, new education classrooms and facilities and much more, and he encouraged attendees to participate in the museum's ongoing "Working on a Building" fundraising campaign to finance the new construction.

Young also commented on the museum's plans to open a special exhibit, spotlighting California's contribution to country music, in March 2012. The exhibit, The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and California Country, was first announced publicly at the 2010 All for the Hall Los Angeles concert. Young expounded on how the plans have taken shape since that announcement.

Gibson Guitars also made a special announcement at this year's concert. The instrument manufacturing company has created a replica of a famous guitar, the Gibson J-200, played by the late California country musician Ray Whitley. Gibson has created a new replica of the special guitar and will donate proceeds from its sale to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's Working on a Building capital campaign.

Fittingly, the concert ended with the five artists performing the Carter Family's "Wildwood Flower,' a tune revered among guitarists because of Mother Maybelle Carter's famous part in the song played on a Gibson guitar, as it turns out.

LOS ANGELES, California, September 6, 2011 - Singer-songwriter Kevin Cronin has been added to the list of performers appearing at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's All for the Hall Los Angeles fundraiser on Tuesday, September 13, at L.A. LIVE's Club Nokia. As a special guest, he will perform one song during the show.

A limited number of tickets remain for the benefit concert, which will follow a "guitar pull" format and feature performances by superstars Zac Brown and Sheryl Crow and Country Music Hall of Fame member Vince Gill. Tickets are available for $250 and $125 (reserved seats in the VIP section of the balcony with access to the VIP lounge) and $100 and $65 (reserved seats in the balcony), and may be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets or online at www.ticketmaster.com, or 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Mon.-Fri. at the STAPLES Center Box Office located at 1111 S. Figueroa St. No fees are charged at the STAPLES Center box office or at the Club Nokia box office on show days (open after 5 p.m.).

As lead singer and a principal songwriter for superstar rock act REO Speedwagon, Kevin Cronin wrote or co-wrote many of the band's biggest hits, including the #1 singles "Keep on Loving You" and "Can't Fight This Feeling." A 30th anniversary edition of the band's seminal album, High Infidelity, was released in July. Cronin continues to tour with REO Speedwagon.

All for the Hall Los Angeles will offer a unique opportunity to see these acclaimed singer-songwriters interact with one another as they take turns swapping songs, stories and personal recollections. The "guitar pull" is a Nashville specialty; it originated in the homes of Nashville songwriters who gathered to try out new compositions for their peers. Nashville’s most storied guitar pulls were hosted by Johnny and June Carter Cash. The hallmarks of a great guitar pull are spontaneity and camaraderie.

The Museum launched All for the Hall, its first-ever non-bricks-and-mortar fundraising campaign, in 2005. The campaign addresses the Museum's need for long-term financial security and will provide a safety net for the institution and its work. This is the fifth year the Museum has taken its "annual giving" event on the road, hosting previous All for the Hall events in New York in 2007 and 2008 and in Los Angeles in 2009 and 2010.

REO Speedwagon rides the wave of baby boomer nostalgia to Hawaii for a couple of shows on Oahu and Maui in late November.

The multi-platinum 1980s band will play the Blaisdell Concert Hall on Friday, Nov. 25, and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theatre Sunday, Nov. 27.

Fronted by singer Kevin Cronin, REO Speedwagon’s popularity peaked with the 1980 best-selling album "Hi Infidelity,” selling over 10 million copies and filled with radio-friendly tracks like the band's signature power ballad "Keep On Loving You" and "Take It On the Run." Follow-up hits included "Roll With the Changes," "Can't Fight This Feeling" and "Can't Stop Rocking."

There's an interesting tale behind REO Speedwagon keyboardist Neal Doughty and the events that would eventually lead him to form a band that would become one of the most successful pop/rock acts in the '70s and '80s. Doughty was going to school at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill. in the mid-60s, studying electrical engineering. He found that the curriculum was tougher than he expected, but what came next was even more unexpected. He met future REO drummer Alan Gratzer, who was encountering similar second thoughts about his chosen path.

The pair stayed in school, but they found a different kind of electricity as they started to make music together and assembling the first version REO Speedwagon, although the band would go through several lineup changes and a shift in music style prior to becoming the REO that we know and love today.

Kevin Cronin and Gary Richrath would join later, forming the core unit that went on to create arena rock magic, striking multi-platinum with "Hi Infidelity" in 1981, an album that contains one of the more impressive A-side song lineups from the period, with hit after hit.

As "Hi Infidelity" marks its 30th anniversary with a new expanded reissue, we spent some time turning the dials back with Doughty to reflect on those times and the things that have happened since then.

As you celebrate 30 years of "Hi Infidelity," looking back, it was a tale of two different albums, going from "Nine Lives" to this one, huh?

Yes. And we still never know exactly what happened, it was just the right songs came together. That's the first album we made where I was convinced every single song was good. I was listening to the thing before it came out. Usually when we'd finish an album, I'd take a little breather and not even listen to it for a while. That one was just my favorite record from the time we finished it. That's how I knew something must be different.

There's another thing that shows up in this 30th Anniversary package we found the original demos for this thing where it was just guitars, bass, drums and kind of a temporary vocal. They didn't have keyboards on it yet, and there wasn’t even a vocal on one of them. These demos are just the way they were played in the studio very quickly, just something to show the record label that we had some songs. Those demos became the foundation of the finished record.

You can hear from that raw demo that the basic songs and even the basic tracks were already there. So that's an interesting comparison to make, listening to the raw product and the finished product. I guess these demos were lost in our manager's garage for 28 years in a mislabeled box.

Did you guys always record demos that were so fully formed back then, with the full band treatment as opposed to the more traditional acoustic demos you hear from a lot of bands?

Usually. A lot of times, when we'd make a record, we'd put the keyboards on toward the end when we knew that's what we wanted then. Which is still what we did with this one, but this seemed to be one that all of the other stuff [already] sounded pretty good. I'm adding the keyboards on and they're going "boy, this stuff sounds pretty good already, you'd better come up with something!"

We didn't really need to put a lot of things on the demos, just in order to show them to the record company they just sounded that good on their own, with the four or five guys playing at the same time. I think that just shows how the foundation of the songs were there. The album sounds big. too. When I was listening back to this album, it really struck me how you play that signature keyboard part that starts off "Keep On Loving You" and then those huge guitars come in. And then "In Your Letter" is another one that I can hear in the demo version how things got built up later.

Right. That song, I put the keyboards on when everything else was done, and I just went home and came up with that keyboard part myself, went into the studio and played it the first time through and everybody loved it.

So although it wasn't always that way, I liked having everything else to listen to by the time I even started thinking about a keyboard part. Because with so much guitar in there, you can't just play keyboard parts as though you’re Bruce Hornsby or something. There's not a whole lot of distorted guitars on his records because it kind of conflicts in the same range as a lot of piano stuff, so that’s why we would often wait until almost the end to see where a keyboard part would fit.

And in this case, we knew the songs were there and we just kept with them on the original tracks, and then we started adding everything else. You mention 'Keep On Loving You' that was a thing where Kevin brought that song in. He'd written it on piano, and he started playing it for us with just him and piano. We didn't really like it we thought that's too soft for us. But then Gary just picked up his guitar and started adding his part to it and we went "oh, this must be one of those things they call a power ballad." I'm not even sure we'd heard such a thing before.

But it was those two guys putting their own individual stamp on the same song and that kind of invented a type of song we still do "Keep On Loving You" and "Can't Fight This Feeling’ in concert. But before that, some of the songs were rockin' and some of them were a little more quiet, like "Time For Me To Fly." That's just a record where two different songwriting styles really came together perfectly. This year is the 30th anniversary for MTV and you guys were a big part of that story how did things change for REO once music videos entered into the equation?

Well, obviously we did much better on the radio, and that would influence what MTV was doing, but from the beginning, we had a nice relationship. We were one of the first 10 videos ever played on MTV. We were the first live concert that MTV made for their own purposes. At one point, "Can't Fight This Feeling" had a concept video we had made, then MTV made a little documentary and they put together their own video for "Can't Fight This Feeling." For about a month, both versions were being played on MTV.

I don't know if that's happened very often or ever. So we were right with them from the beginning, we just became friends with the organization. Eventually, it even got to a point where the videos were doing better than the records, like "That Ain't Love" a big expensive video that we shot out in the desert with David Fincher, who directed "The Social Network." 25 years ago, he was directing our video, a very cinematic, beautiful looking video. MTV liked it, so I think it got more play on MTV than it did on the radio.

Also, we always had a lot of fun making videos. We never tried to be too serious. Some of them are just downright goofy and people seem to like that, too. So the video thing definitely helped us, at least two or three of our songs, quite a bit.

Appropriately, the "Hi Infidelity" album is a big part of your concert setlist this year, with seven tracks in the set. REO did a full album run-through of the album a few years ago for XM. What sort of feelings did that bring out, playing those songs, some of which you hadn’t played since the album was recorded?

What was remarkable was how easily they all came back, they were actually easy songs to play. I always had the theory that when a song’s easy to play, it's also easy to listen to. I think that was part of it too, the songs were relatively simple. These were songs that maybe were a little more complicated than they sounded on the surface, but just very natural and easy to listen to. The thing that surprised me the most was how quickly they came back and how much I still liked them.
"Find Your Own Way Home" (2007) was a great album. Is there perhaps another new REO studio album coming in the future?

Well, you know, it's so hard to market a full length CD from a band that [has as much released material as REO]. We still have complete interest in writing new material and experimenting with new things, but it's probably more likely to be something like recording one song at a time, shipping it straight to iTunes, because we have friends there to0. People kind of like having the choice of buying one song at a time these days, so I think we probably won't keep fighting that trend. We'll probably jump in with the 21st century style of buying music. Because I know, Kevin especially, will never stop being able to write songs.

Kevin Cronin remembers the groaning.
He was excited about a new song and debuted it on piano for his REO Speedwagon band mates in the studio. They weren't keen on "Keep On Loving You."

"The rest of the guys looked at me like, 'What is wrong with you, dude? There's no way. You don't think we're going to record that song, do you?'" Cronin recalled.

Until then, REO was best known for high-energy rockers such as "Ridin' the Storm Out" and "Roll with the Changes." Cronin was not deterred.

"I was relentless," he said. "I wrote the song in the middle of the night; I kind of stumbled into the studio at 4 in the morning. That song came from a real deep place in me, so I was convinced of it because of how the song was born."

He played it a few more times, waiting for someone to jump in on bass or guitar, like usual, when REO worked up new songs. Silence. Finally, then-REO guitarist Gary Richrath plugged his Les Paul into a stack of Marshall amps and sarcastically played along.

"He was trying to drown me out and mess with me," Cronin said. "But when he started playing along with this big, nasty guitar tone, I said, 'Dude, that's exactly what this song needs!' So it backfired on him. It hit the right notes with me. It took this soft love song, which could have been on a Barry Manilow album, and turned it into a rock song."

Not just any rock song but a smash that became REO's first No. 1 hit and propelled the band into superstars. Thirty years ago, REO's "Hi Infidelity" was in the midst of a 15-week run at No. 1. The album has sold nearly 10 million copies.

REO will reissue the CD in July with a bonus package that includes demos of nearly every song, including "Keep on Loving You." The band also is devoting a big chunk of its 2011 tour, including Sunday's free show in Erie, to their biggest album.

"The set list starts out with seven 'Hi Infidelity' songs in a row, right from the get-go," Cronin said. "There are a couple songs we never played in concert, so we're definitely embracing the 'Hi Infidelity' phenomenon this year."

Getting nostalgic didn't come easy; Cronin says he prefers to look ahead than to look back. REO fans may be surprised to learn he recently hunkered down in Nashville to write songs with two country female artists -- Martina McBride and Deana Carter.

"That was a pleasant afternoon to say the least," Cronin said. "I wrote some songs I obviously never would have written and came out with eight or 10, some songs I'm really proud of. It was just a songwriting exercise, so we'll see. These things do take time. But there are some big-name Nashville artists who have embraced some songs."

Ironically, it was another country female artist -- Dolly Parton with "9 to 5" -- that REO knocked out of No. 1 with "Keep on Loving You" in 1981. Other hits followed, including "Take It On the Run" and "In Your Letter."

REO had been around a decade before it broke through; "Hi Infidelity" was its 11th album. Why did that one become the one?

"We'd been touring so much," Cronin said. "That type of workload takes a toll on everyone's family life and personal relationships. By the time 1980 rolled round, all of our personal lives were pretty much in a shambles. And the band was an oasis for us. That was where we came together. It was like misery loves company, in a way.

"When the band was together, there was a vibe and a power, and all the songs that got written for that record formed a similar emotional palette. It became a kind of unconscious concept album, in a way. The title just encapsulated the whole feeling that was going on with the band. So, it was more than just nice tunes and some good performances."

Erie gets a free performance on Sunday, thanks to sponsors who stepped forward. Look for Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott to give the band the key to the city and possibly sing along. That'd be fine with Cronin.

"We had the governor of Arkansas in Little Rock last week. 'Roll with the Changes' is a free-for-all," he said. "Rick Springfield and Art Alexakis (Everclear) sat in with us in Los Angeles (on Sunday). So, if the mayor wants to join, we'll have a good time."

Opening for REO will be Georgia Satellites, the Southern-rockers best known for radio hit "Keep Your Hands To Yourself."

Jon Huntsman may be on the defense about his ties to President Obama, but there's another issue he might not be able to easily escape ahead of his expected 2012 presidential run: His unabashed love of REO Speedwagon.

As The Ticket previously reported, the former Utah governor dropped out of high school to play keyboards in a prog-rock band called Wizard, which specialized in covers by the '80s power rock group.

Asked about his perhaps questionable musical tastes by the San Francisco Chronicle's Carla Marinucci, Huntsman at first tried to distract from the issue by declaring his love for the Foo Fighters. But ultimately, the 2012 hopeful just wouldn't renounce the band that inspired him to practice their songs upwards of five hours a day.

After months of speculation, funnyman Russell Brand has officially signed on to play the role of Lonny in the upcoming film adaptation of '80s tuner Rock of Ages, according to Deadline.com.
In addition to serving as the film's narrator, Brand’s character is an employee at the rock club The Bourbon Room and right-hand man to club owner Dennis Dupree, to be played by 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin. The two will duet on the REO Speedwagon hit “I Can't Fight This Feeling.”
The film's starry cast also includes the previously reported Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, Julianne Hough as Kansas-transplant Sherrie, Mary J. Blige as strip club owner Justice, Paul Giamatti as manager of Stacee’s band and newcomer Diego Gonzalez Boneta in the lead role of Drew. No confirmation yet on the involvement of Brand’s pop star wife Katy Perry, who may join him on screen playing a sexy barmaid and exotic dancer.

Officially not joining the cast, also according to Deadline, is Oscar nominee Amy Adams, who recently landed the plum role of Lois Lane in Superman film Man of Steel. Adams was rumored to be looking into the role of an overzealous journalist who duets and then beds down with Tom Cruise's rock star character, a role previously considered by Anne Hathaway.

Rock of Ages is set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, where small town girl Sherrie meets a big city rocker at the Bourbon Room, L.A.’s most famous rock club. Their love story is told through the hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Asia, Whitesnake and many more. The Broadway musical, which is now running at the Helen Hayes Theatre, received five Tony nominations (including Best Musical) after opening on April 7, 2009.

The film, directed by Hairspray helmer Adam Shankman, will have a script by librettist Chris D’Arienzo has reportedly gotten a rewrite from Michael Arndt, who penned Little Miss Sunshine. The movie is expected to begin filming in Florida on May 19, and will hit movie theaters on June 1, 2012.

The lineup for the first-ever Electric Forest festival has been released and features an eclectic mix of acts. String Cheese Incident will perform three shows over the course of the four-day event, which takes place at the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, MI on June 30 - July 3. Event promoters clearly went for the "we're not like every other summer festival" feel for Electric Forest's lineup as Dutch DJs Tiësto and Laidback Luke as well as Midwest rockers REO Speedwagon aren't exactly doing the rounds this season.Other acts on the electronica-heavy bill include Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, Shpongle presents The Shpongletron Experience and Kaskade. Kevin took time to give Goldmine his list of 10 Albums That Changed His Life.

Elton John: Madman Across The Water Singing, songwriting, arrangements, this album has it all. "Holiday Inn," which opens Side Two, is the song that got me the gig in REO.

The Beatles: Rubber Soul This was the first album I ever owned. I am partial to the U.S. version, which opens with "I've Just Seen A Face," a song I still love to play. The second cut, "Norwegian Wood" has perhaps the best opening line in rock history, "I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me."

The Who: Who's Next My favorite hard-rock album of all time, and the artwork broke every rule.

Crosby, Stills and Nash: Crosby, Stills and Nash I had been a fan of The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and The Hollies when an agent at Creative Artists told me about this upcoming collaboration. The first time I listened, I played the opening cut, "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" 12 times in a row. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. This was the perfect record.
Stephen Stills: Stephen Stills Two words: "Black Queen." You must hear this incredible record.

James Taylor: JT I am a huge fan of all of James Taylor's music. His version of "Handy Man" kills me every time I hear it, to this day.

The Byrds: Mr. Tambourine Man This was the first album by The Byrds. When I heard it, I immediately sold my Gibson ES 335 guitar and bought a Rickenbacker 12-string like the one played by Jim McGuinn. I still use that guitar and love its jangly sound.

Mahavishnu Orchestra and John McLaughlin-The Inner Mounting Flame When I first listened to this album, I could not believe what I was hearing. The guitar had been reinvented, and jazz and rock had been fused.

Simon and Garfunkel: Bookends I loved all of S & G's early songs, but this album was such a cohesive piece of work. I was playing coffee houses in Chicago in a folk duo called The Late Late Show. We thought it was our originals that kept people coming to see us, but in retrospect, it was probably our Simon and Garfunkel covers, including most of the songs on this album.

Sting: Dream Of The Blue Turtles I had been a fan of all four Police albums, so I was skeptical about a Sting solo project. When I heard this record, I ditched my solo career.

In a more rockin' vein is REO's thoroughly enjoyable Christmas effort. First released last year, it has been reissued with three bonus tracks (a fun "Sleigh Ride," acoustic based original ballad "I Believe in Santa Claus," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"; downloaded versions add "We Three Kings"). Sometimes reminiscent of Trans-Siberian Orchestra (though far more interesting and minus the over-the-top aspects), a rock gospel flavored "Children Go Where I Send Thee," doo wop-oriented "I'll Be Home For Christmas," "White Snows of Winter," a countryish "Blue Christmas" (with bassist Bruce Hall on lead vocals) and "Deck the Halls,” where frontman Kevin Cronin's kids get into the mix, are among the songs assembled here.

On September 27, at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre REO frontman Kevin Cronin will rock the Rock stage with a post-show performance of REO's hit-and Rock of Ages number-"Can't Fight This Feeling" backed by the Rock of Ages band, Arsenal. He will then be joined on stage by all of REO Speedwagon for a Q & A session with that evening's audience. The post-show performance/ Q & A is free and open to that evening's ticket holders only.

This will be Cronin's second appearance on the Rock of Ages stage. He and Tommy Shaw of STYX joined the Rock cast in April 2009 to perform their single "Can't Stop Rockin.'"

Rock of Ages is set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, where a small town girl meets a big city rocker in L.A.'s most famous rock club. Their love story is told through the hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Poison, Asia, Whitesnake and many more.

REO Speedwagon, including frontman Kevin Cronin, will perform their hit "Can't Fight This Feeling" following the Sept. 27 performance of the Tony-nominated musical Rock of Ages at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. REO Speedwagon is bass player Bruce Hall, keyboard player Neal Doughty, lead guitarist Dave Amato and drummer Bryan Hitt. The band has sold more than 40 million albums to date, featuring hits like "Can't Fight This Feeling", "Keep On Loving You", "Roll With The Changes", "Ridin' The Storm Out", "Take It On The Run" and "Time For Me To Fly."

The post-show performance/question-and-answer session is free and open to that evening's ticket holders only.The musical comedy Rock of Ages borrows rock hits of the 1980s to tell the story of showbiz lovers in L.A. The score includes "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," "I Wanna Know What Love Is," "Here I Go Again," "Don't Stop Believin'" and more.

Rock of Ages is written by Chris D'Arienzo, directed by Kristin Hanggi and choreographed by Kelly Devine.

Though REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin says that he's "not one for nostalgia," he's enthusiastic about the band's two-year plan to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its biggest-selling album, 1980's "Hi Infidelity" -- which includes a deluxe reissue and possibly a tour playing the full album.

"This is 2010, so we're kind of celebrating 30 years since we recorded the album," Cronin tells Billboard.com. "Next year is 2011 -- 30 years since 1981, the year that rocked our world...The 'Hi Infidelity' record was such a turning point for us, just on a personal and professional level. And an awful lot of people took this music into their lives, into their hearts. It's just too special of a time to ignore, so I just decided for this anniversary I'm going to embrace it and go for it...We're milking it for everything it's worth!"

"Hi Infidelity" was REO's only No. 1 album and the top-selling rock release of 1981. It's been certified nine-times platinum and spawned four Top 40 hits, including the chart-topping "Keep on Loving You" and the Top 5 "Take It on the Run." And, Cronin adds, it came at a time when REO was "literally on the brink of being dropped by our label. This was kind of our last chance."

Now the group and its fans will have multiple opportunities to relive "Hi Infidelity." The group is performing the album's entire first side, with some subtle re-arrangements, on its current summer tour with Pat Benatar; meanwhile, Cronin says, REO is talking about performing the complete album in 2011 -- which it's only done once before, for an XM satellite radio broadcast.

Also on tap for next year is a deluxe edition of "Hi Infidelity," which will likely include the original demos that REO's manager recently found in his garage.

"He found a box that said 'REO' on it," Cronin recalls. "It was mostly old photographs, but he dropped it off at my house and when I went through it there it was, a tape from Crystal Recording Studios, July 1980. No one knew where they were. We searched the vaults in New York, L.A. -- a full cavity search, you might say -- and no one found them. So we were like, 'All right, I guess that's our holy grail. We'll keep searching for them'. "

Cronin says it took significant work to get the tape into usable shape, but the results were as good as he remembered. "It's pretty fun to listen to -- no keyboards, no backing vocals, just guitar and lead vocals. On the finished 'Hi Infidelity,' about half of it is performances that were on that demo tape. There was just some magic in those performances, so hopefully we'll include that in the deluxe set."

Other plans for the reissue are still being set, as are REO's tour plans for 2011. Meanwhile, Cronin says the current edition of REO is in a "creative spurt" that he hopes will yield the group's first set of new material since 2007's "Find Your Own Way Home" (not counting the 2009's holiday album, "Not So Silent Night.")

Cronin is playing a new song in concert -- which he says will be called either "Can't Stop Loving You" or "Unfinished Poem" -- and he's pleased that "this is another one of those tight periods for the band. You can't take it for granted when you get five guys all in the same mindspace -- like we were for 'Hi Infidelity.' It's a real special thing."

In an interview Thursday with the NewsTribune, REO Speedwagon front man Kevin Cronin promised a "big storm" that would "blow everybody away" when discussing the band's then-upcoming "Concerts for a Cause" show at Cedar Point Sportsman Club. He couldn't have been more right. REO Speedwagon fans were left wet and disappointed Friday night when storms caused the cancellation of the show. Shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, concert organizer Merry Noonan contacted the NewsTribune to say the show had been canceled. "We tried everything we possibly could to have the show go on," Noonan said. A brief, windy storm early in the afternoon blew over a few tents, but didn't ruin the show. Two opening acts managed to play but a second storm provided a "torrential downpour" that soaked the stage, equipment and everything electrical, according to Noonan. "The band wanted to play but there was no way we could turn anything on," she said. The concert raised funds for Leepertown Grade School to assist with a technology upgrade. "We're hoping that at the end of the day we have money to give...to the cause," Noonan said. She shared her thanks to those in attendance for being understanding. The REO Speedwagon show will not be rescheduled. "It's something we can't control," Noonan said. The next Concerts for a Cause show will be Lady Antebellum on Aug. 14 at Cedar Point Sportsman Club to benefit John F. Kennedy School in Spring Valley.

Los Angeles, CA...March 25, 2010 - Due to doctor's orders, REO Speedwagon is forced to, regretfully, reschedule two shows this weekend as a result of a severe flu REO guitarist Dave Amato is experiencing. The March 26th show at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan, IL and the March 27th show at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, IL will be rescheduled; announcement of the new dates to come shortly.

"Dave is one of the true rock warriors and, if he could, he would absolutely be on stage this weekend," said lead singer Kevin Cronin. "As much as we hate to postpone these concerts, we have to respect doctor's orders. The truth is that we know both of these shows would be packed with some of our most loyal fans; and we would not be able to do our best for you guys under these conditions."

All tickets for the shows this weekend will be honored for the rescheduled dates. If ticket holders can no longer attend these newly rescheduled dates, they can contact the box offices at 815-726-6600 in Joliet, or 847-263-6300 in Waukegan, or Ticketmaster Customer Service at 800-653-8000.

The first 20 dates of the cross-country tour have been announced today, along with the first on-sale date of Wednesday, February 24th for the Gilford, NH stop at US Cellular Pavilion. Pat Benatar and REO Speedwagon, together again? If it seems like an odd marriage, learn your history: the two paired up in 1995 for a cross-country co-headlining tour that was, by all accounts, a hit. In their quest to prove that lightning may indeed strike twice, the two acts have partnered up again for "Love on the Run" an extended summer tour that will take them to arenas, amphitheaters and, yes, casinos across the country. There's even one date at a California winery.

"Pat Benatar remains one of a select few great female rock voices and Neil Giraldo one of the most underrated rock guitar slingers," REO's Kevin Cronin tells Spinner. "Listen to any of their records and you hear Pat's amazing vocal with Neil's powerful yet artistic guitar work as a perfect compliment."

We're pretty sure Benatar's camp feels the same way about REO Speedwagon. In a release about the upcoming tour, Benatar says that "it should be a blast for us as well as the audience." If they're having fun, everybody's having fun.

Country star though he is, Keith Urban can't resist the sweet sounds of '70s and '80s soft rock.

Urban indulged in piano versions of a few of his favorite tunes at a recent cover shoot in Los Angeles for the new PEOPLE Country issue, treating onlookers to an impromptu concert that included REO Speedwagon's "Keep on Loving You."

"Guilty pleasure!" laughed Urban, who good-naturedly complained as he tickled the ivories, "I wish I could really play."

Urban, who shared the true stories behind his music for the PEOPLE Country cover story, continued his playing with a medley of Elton John's hits. "I loved Elton John's voice growing up," he said. "He had almost a country sound to it."

If you are going to introduce the kids to older artists such as Journey, REO Speedwagon, The Supremes, Neil Diamond, Paul Anka and the Rolling Stones, why not go all the way and bring along the livelier recording techniques of artists from those era? Granted, some of those "classic" musicians were teen idols themselves in their time, but surely none used such amount of studio tinkering as the songs on the "Glee" soundtrack.

A cover of REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling" sung by Cory Monteith who plays the hunky Finn Hudson on the series" is a pleasant power ballad that thrives on its archetypal 1980s melody. Monteith's voice is pleasant but not strong enough to carry the song, ironically lacking the theatrically sentimental power of the original vocals.

Over the past few years, a number of music acts have jumped into video games as those who have been bombarded with ads for the Beatles Rockband game can attest. Until now, every one of these games have been "action" oriented video games where users must keep up with the pace of action to win.

Now, 1980s powerhouse band REO Speedwagon is offering something different. Yes, that REO Speedwagon: rock mullets, taking it on the run baby, because, you know, that's the way you want it baby, and you just want to keep on lovin' you. Or so they say.

Along with Curious Sense, which creates digital music experiences for various acts, the band just released a "casual" video game called "Find Your Own Way Home," that features new and old REO songs in a story-based, slower paced "mind-game" you can play on a computer.

And unlike the $200 - $300 Guitar Hero and Rockband fare, REO's game can be played and downloaded online for $8 at the new Republic of Music (and other popular gaming sites).

I recently sat down with REO lead singer Kevin Cronin to talk about his former mullet, the video game, and vinyl pants.

Q: The music industry has obviously changed a lot. It's gotten tough for bands. Give me your perspective of those changes and how has the band changed to meet those alterations in the landscape.

A: When we started out, in choosing life as a musician you were also choosing a life of desperate poverty. When musicians actually started getting paid, a lot of posers decided it was a sound financial strategy to start bands.

Q: It's making a mild comeback but do you miss vinyl?

A: I really do miss my old vinyl pants.

Q: What did you think when you were first approached with the idea of a video game?

A: I was impressed by the dashing good looks of my avatar.

Q: What does the video game provide you in terms of a creative avenue to reach fans?

A: Fans get an opportunity to re-mix "Roll With The Changes", so it will be interesting to see how they hear the song.

Q: Were you amazed to learn how many people are playing games like these?

A: I am amazed that anyone has the time to play these games. I barely have time to brush my teeth.

Q: When you first met Adam Blumenthal of Curious Sense, and rumor has it his first words to you were, "F!@# you." Did you want to club him over the head with your guitar or hug him?

A: Adam had the misfortune of meeting us on a Thursday...or as it came to be known on our tour, "F!@# You Thursday". The following Thursday I met figure skating champion, Peggy Fleming, who greeted me in similar fashion. Being told to f!@# off by 'America's Sweetheart' was definitely a tour highlight.

Q: I'm a longtime fan and I really miss the old school rock mullet you used to sport. What the hell?

A: Strictly speaking, my doo was more of a "mull-fro"...equal parts mullet and Afro, but thanks.

Q: When you had that hair, did you and Billy Squier ever exchange notes on hair care?

A: No, but Richard Marx learned a thing or two from me. Later I would trade in the "mull-fro" for more of an Art Alexakis (of the band Everclear) look...and Art tortures me with this fact regularly.

Q: Despite being bare-lipped, would you say you support the Mustached American way of life?

A: Actually, I strongly disapprove of mustaches...two words: "food particles". I am Irish. Facial hair is not one of my people's strong points.

Q: You do know it improves guitar play and melodies by 38 and 49 percent respectively, yes?

A: That would explain David Crosby's perfect pitch.

Q: You've been at this 40 years or so and you've done more interviews than I'm sure you care to remember. Certainly I'm the best looking person to ever interview you, but am I also the dumbest? And if not, who was?

A: I'll take your word for it. I'm sure I have spoken to dumber interviewers, but none come to mind at the moment.

"The week began in Nashville, where two of my favorite country music artists showed up to jam with us on "Roll With The Changes". When we arrived at the Sommet Center, we heard this beautiful voice reverberating through the backstage area. Turns out that Martina McBride, perhaps the purist natural singer in country music, was rehearsing with her band in the sound stage, which connects to the dressing room area. I was told that her and her husband, Johnny, are REO fans, and wanted to meet us. Turns out they are from Wichita, Kansas, right in the heart of REO Country, and have been fans since they were dating. Then, word got around the Brad Paisley was coming to the show, and the buzz backstage was palpable. Dave and I had met Brad at a benefit concert we played together a few years back, so it was cool of him to come down. I really didn't expect it, but both Brad and Martina came up for "Roll", and the audience went wild. Standing on stage in Nashville, with Brad to my left and Martina to my right, the band rocking full tilt, singing that song...it was another unbelievable moment that music has allowed me to experience."

"Find Your Own Way Home- The Game," was conceived of and produced by digital product studio Curious Sense. In Find Your Own Way Home, the player is the protagonist in a story that unfolds across dozens of game levels for several hours of entertainment. The game is designed to appeal to both the typical gamer, and the dedicated REO Speedwagon fan. For music fans, the game introduces new ways to interact with music; and for the typical gamer, it brings several innovative game features to the category" in particular bridges between the game experience and the real world.

In the game the player is an entertainment reporter who has been on assignment with REO Speedwagon as they’ve been finishing their new album. The game takes place on the day the new album is to be released at a fantastic release party. But something goes wrong, when Cronin goes missing, and it’s up to the player to locate the missing star.

More proof the Internet owns the music business: Wednesday, REO Speedwagon released a first-of-its-kind videogame called "Find Your Own Way Home" to promote its music.

Casual gamers must track down Speedwagon lead singer Kevin Cronin, who goes missing just before a virtual album release party. The game features more than a dozen of the band's songs.

Users can buy the game for $8 (or play for an hour for free) at The Republic of Music. It will also be available at the game sites for Internet portals such as Yahoo! ( YAHOO - news - people ) and Microsoft's ( MSFT - news - people ) MSN. Everyone who buys the game will get a 25% discount on the band's new Christmas album, Not So Silent Night. For those who find the "golden ticket" embedded in the game, there's a chance to meet the group in person.

Even though REO Speedwagon has sold more than 40 million albums since its first record was released in 1971, the group's foray into the casual gaming market is both an attempt to reach new fans and an effort to stay relevant among its existing fan base. "As time goes on, you have to work harder to stay current," says Cronin.

Indeed. The Internet era of music has forced established artists in particular to seek new revenue streams to compensate for the decline in physical album sales. The result is that music is being marketed as an experience, not simply as a product--a phenomenon highlighted by David Kusek and Gerd Leonhard in their 2005 book The Future of Music.

Will the game get fans listening to Speedwagon? They have no idea. At this point the entire project is an experiment in Internet marketing--and not the only one. AS the recorded music industry struggles, rock bands have been trying to stay in the limelight by marketing themselves in myriad ways. A familiar group from the classic-rock era of the 1970s and 1980s is hoping to get fans to pay for play.The band, REO Speedwagon, is teaming up with a digital agency, Curious Sense, to introduce an online video game aimed at the adults known as casual gamers. The game, scheduled to come out on Wednesday, is titled REO Speedwagon: Find Your Own Way Home, after the band's 2007 album.

The game joins the ranks of online video games sponsored by or created for marketers. Among them are DQ Tycoon, for Dairy Queen, and The Office, inspired by the sitcom "The Office" on NBC.

The REO Speedwagon game was conceived and produced by Curious Sense and developed by Dhruva Interactive in Bangalore, India. It is intended to promote the band in general and its new album, "Not So Silent Night: Christmas With REO Speedwagon," in particular.

For instance, game buyers receive coupon codes for 25 percent off the holiday album. And there is a sweepstakes for players who find the "golden ticket" hidden in the game; 20 prize packages will include real tickets to see REO Speedwagon at a concert in 2010 and to meet backstage with the band.

The downloadable interactive game features avatar versions of the five band members and a make-believe reporter for an entertainment TV show. The plot is centered on the disappearance of Kevin Cronin, the lead vocalist for REO Speedwagon.

The game will be made available on Web sites popular with casual gamers, like BigFishGames.com, MSN Games (games.msn.com) and Yahoo Games (games.yahoo.com). It will cost computer users about $8 to play for each session, which can last as long as 10 hours; they can play the first hour free.

"We build digital experiences beyond a typical Web site, which offer long, interactive times between the content and the consumer," said Adam Blumenthal, president and chief executive at Curious Sense in Durham, N.C.

The hours spent playing games online are a far cry from the brief moments a consumer spends watching a television commercial or glancing at a banner ad. That interested Mr. Blumenthal, who worked at agencies like McKinney and R/GA before starting Curious Sense as what he calls a "product development studio."

Also of interest is the potential revenue from the game. It costs about $80,000 to develop and market a typical online casual game, Mr. Blumenthal said, and "a good game" can be bought by 100,000 to 150,000 people.

"The games pay for themselves," he added, "and then some." (Revenue in this instance will be divided among the producers, the Web sites that host the game and REO Speedwagon.)

The game is intended to provide the band and potentially, any band that wants to star in a similar game with an alternative source of revenue, in addition to that from participation in other video games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, licensing songs for commercials, selling songs on iTunes and peddling merchandise at concerts.

Such revenue is increasingly important to musicians to compensate for the falling sales of CDs and other forms of traditional recorded music.

"It's a great concept and we're very happy to be involved," said Tom Consolo, a manager at Front Line Management in Los Angeles who has represented REO Speedwagon for more than 20 years.

"You have your ups and downs" as a band, so "you're always looking to reach a broader audience," Mr. Consolo said. "And with the advent of the Internet, you can reach around the globe."

In fact, the game being promoted on the group's Web site (reospeedwagon.com) and a Curious Sense Web site (therom.com) will be available in French, German, Japanese and Spanish as well as English.

When Mr. Blumenthal contacted him about having REO Speedwagon take part in the game, Mr. Consolo recalled, "I didn't even know what casual games were."

"I remember the first time I saw a pinball machine with Kiss," he added. "This is a 21st-century version."

"For me and the band, it's always interesting to try new ideas out," Mr. Consolo said, because it helps cultivate an image for the band as contemporary rather than an oldies act.

"You don't just lay back and play your greatest hits all the time," he added.

Mr. Consolo said he appreciated the irony that the Internet, which has been blamed for falling sales of recorded music, could generate interest in bands through online games.

(It is appropriate then that the game features a version of the REO Speedwagon song "Roll With the Changes," along with versions of other hits like "Keep on Loving You" and "Can't Fight This Feeling.")

There is another benefit to the Internet, Mr. Consolo said, in that "kids are getting turned on to a lot of classic-rock radio artists" they may not hear on the radio either because they do not listen to stations playing those acts or because they do not listen to radio at all.

Mr. Blumenthal recently met the band members at a concert and demonstrated what the game looked like after six months of development and production work.

"I was struck right off the bat by the dazzling good looks of my avatar," Mr. Cronin said, laughing.

"There is a need for us to explore all kinds of different avenues to get our music out there," Mr. Cronin said in a telephone interview. "If you just think about how it used to be, you'll be left in the dust."

REO Speedwagon will be featured promoting their holiday album on ABC's Holiday of Stars. The holiday special airs on ABC across the country at 5pm(EST),4pm(CST),2pm (PST) on Sunday, December 6th. REO's lead singer/guitarist Kevin Cronin and lead guitarist Dave Amato spent some time in the studio, performed some classic hits and even a classic holiday hit from the new Not So Silent Night album. Fans will also get a special,intimate look at home with Cronin and his family for the holidays, as well.

In Find Your Own Way Home the gamer plays the role of a Hollywood reporter who has been on assignment with the legendary rock band, REO Speedwagon. Tonight the band's new album debuts and there's a star-studded album release party at a fabulous oceanfront estate. You'll be doing a report live from the red carpet.

But as the busy day is unfolding, and you prepare for tonight's broadcast, and the gala event to follow, an unexpected mystery-adventure will begin. REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin doesn't show up for pre-party interviews. When, hours later, still no one knows Kevin's whereabouts, you have the chance to be the hero tracking down clues to locate the missing star.

Big-gesture and easygoing, sweetened by Kevin Cronin's ever-enthusiastic voice, "Not So Silent Night" is pretty much the ideal pop Christmas album for early-1980s sentimentalists: double-guitar leads, a little bit of blues, a little bit of country, a lush ballad ("The White Snows of Winter"), a rock shuffle, ("Winter Wonderland"), and some moral high-ground (John Lennon's "Happy Xmas"). It's a record trading on styles so old and codified, it's incredible that it was made in 2009, but man, is it efficient. (Sony Special Products, $6.98)

It's been a busy few years for veteran rockers REO Speedwagon. From releasing their first album in more than a decade, one that had the band rediscovering its rock roots - 2007's Find Your Own Way Home - to nonstop touring with the likes of Styx, Journey, and Night Ranger, the band has worked at a harder pace than many bands half their age.

Now, nearly 40 years after their debut, REO is releasing its first Christmas album. Not So Silent Night mixes traditional Christmas carols, obscure gems, and a cover of John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" with the classic REO sound - big, melodic choruses and guitars.

The album begins sweetly with a short, melodic version of "The First Noel," before segueing into a bluesy "Winter Wonderland." ‘Silent Night" and "Children Go Where I Send Thee" show the band in a surprisingly gospel vein and prove to be highlights of the disc with the former done as a ballad with choir and the latter as an up-tempo number.

For a band most famous for its ballads, the fact the slower material works better here is not surprising. "The White Snows of Winter" in particular stands out and should prove to be a favorite of fans of the band's softer side.

The Lennon cover is by the numbers and while not an improvement over the classic original is still a strong track. In keeping with the holiday spirit, all proceeds from this track go to the John Lennon Foundation. The band's cover of "Blue Christmas" finds them veering off into country territory in surprisingly convincing fashion

While the band rocks up their versions of "Deck The Halls" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman," these versions come off as forced and aren't to the same standard as the rest of the CD. Still the positives outweigh the negatives here.

REO Speedwagon may not be the first band people think of when it comes to recording a Christmas album, but they make it work. Fans of the band and of Christmas music should enjoy this release for years to come.

In the realm of good ideas that take forever to realize, Kevin Cronin might deserve some kind of medal.

The REO Speedwagon front man easily jokes about the three-plus decades it took him and longtime friend Tommy Shaw of the band Styx to get together and write some music.

While aboard a tour bus in upstate New York, Cronin recounted meeting Shaw after a club gig in Chicago in 1975 and how the two hoped to write together someday.

"We actually met on a flight to Florida and it was right as he was going to join Styx and I was getting hooked up with REO," Cronin said by phone. "But we always enjoyed each other and we had that idea to work together at some point. It just took us longer than we thought to actually do it."

The music that was 34 years in the making comes at the end of each show on the bands' dual-headlining summer tour, in the form of "Keep On Rocking," which sees both bands on stage together for an extended jam session that's been sending the Baby Boomer crowds away happy each night.

On top of realizing a long-time ambition, Cronin said the two-band finale on the new song helps put a new twist on their shows since REO and Styx have toured together twice before.

"Tommy and I were sitting around last winter, talking about touring and we wanted to do something that would make this one special since we've toured together a couple times before," he said. "It was a bit of a challenge, getting all the arrangements to work and matching up everyone's sensibilities. That's hard enough when you're one band working on a song, but even more so when it's two different bands even if you have a lot of overlap in styles like we do.

"But we worked on it, we got in the right head space and it's let us have a blast during this entire tour. It's hard to say why it is we match up so well and you try to not think about it too much, but it's kind of one of those Billy Joel and Elton things where when you pair it up - one plus one makes three."

Part of the attraction is that both bands have had lots of time to polish their hits-heavy shows through the years. While both bands have released new studio albums in recent years - with another REO record due at the end of 2009 - Cronin said everyone is aware that it's the longtime anthems like "Keep On Loving You" and "Take It On The Run" that keep audiences coming out.

"I know the game is that people are coming out to these shows to hear the hits they've known for years and that's fine, but we need to stay creative so we can do new things like the new song with the combined jam at the end," he said.

"If we were a total nostalgia act we would never have been able to do that. By staying creative you get to help the old songs stay fresh, even if you're messing with them in the smallest way that the audience isn't really going to pick up on."

Cronin also said the latest song comes as a bit of an affirmation to people going through hard times during a recession, especially in Detroit where the band has always been warmly received.

"'Can't Stop Rocking' is about how you have to keep on going no matter what," he said. "It's a hard thing to write about because I know that if I lost my job I can't imagine what that would feel like, but we wanted to do something with that idea in mind and make something that would help people have some fun even as they go through some of the toughest times they've ever seen.

"You see lots of news about people hit really hard by the economic situation we're going through as a country, how lots of hard-working people turned around one day and had the American dream pulled out from under them. We know that's especially true in Detroit, which has through the years been a place that felt really special. When we walk out on the stage at Pine Knob the joy just seems to be at a higher level.

7/18/2009 - REO Speedwagon, Styx, 38 Special stir up old memories

It would be nearly impossible to rifle through a cassette collection in the 1970s or '80s and not find the works of .38 Special, Styx and REO Speedwagon - three bands that helped define arena rock.

The Can't Stop Rockin' Tour brought all three to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Saturday night - a powerhouse lineup for fans of the genre.

The opening act .38 Special came out guns a blazin' with the signature tune "Rockin' into the Night" from the album Flashback preparing the audience for just that. Those who had already settled into their seats responded, singing along with "Fantasy Girl," "Second Chance" and, of course, "Hang on Loosely".

As befits a Fourth of July celebration, Styx hit the stage with "Miss America". They followed with "Too Much Time On My Hands" as well as a Beatles tribute performance of "I Am The Walrus," with the audience filling in the "goo goo g'joobs".

From Lawrence Gowan's moves on the rotating keyboard platform (playing backwards and even standing on top of the thing) to moments where the three guitarists James Young, Tommy Shaw and Ricky Phillips would play in a synchronized line, Styx definitely gets the formula for good arena rock.

Shaw had the crowd's attention as he reminisced about his lucky break getting called to join Styx, following the story with the hit "Crystal Ball".

Styx kept the crowd happy, playing all the hits "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" and "Come Sail Away".

REO Speedwagon took the stage last, jamming out familiar hits like "Don't Let Him Go" and "Take It On the Run". The crowd roared in support as the band lit into "Time For Me to Fly".

If we all still smoked, the lighters would have been waving for "Can't Fight This Feeling," circa 1984, and "Keep on Loving You". Kevin Cronin's pitch-perfect vocals and dead-on guitar solos had us searching the memories of our hearts, taking us back to first loves and bad breakups.

And though the waists we wrapped our arms around Saturday night weren't likely the same as two decades ago, the emotion translates to today. Because it's how the song made us feel back then all weird and cool and desperately in love.

Styx returned to the stage for the bands' new single "Can't Stop Rockin" a joint effort in support of the tour. The single was written by REO Speedwagon's Cronin and Shaw from Styx.

While REO Speedwagon and Styx might not be gaining hordes of new fans, as evidenced by the dominant 35 to 60-year-old segment of the crowd, the familiarity keeps these guys relevant at least to those of us who remain rooted in the belief that the mix tapes we grew up with still blow the doors off our kids' iTunes downloads.

When it comes to drawing crowds to concerts, it doesn't hurt that these guys bring the same energy to the stage they did three decades ago. Even after the closing number, Cronin still looked like his Converse sneakers were spring-loaded. I'd be pretty psyched, too, if my band could bring people to their feet after 30 years.

Starting 30 minutes before every show and during intermission, audience members seated in the orchestra will be able to buy color-coded drink chips from waiters in the orchestra or at the bar. The chips can then be redeemed during the show, from your seat, for the drink of your choice. - Harmonix and MTV Games announced today it will add a 7-pack of songs featuring some of the biggest hits from Styx and REO Speedwagon to the Rock Band Music Store of downloadable content. Next week's lineup also includes a 3-pack from progressive rock outfit Hautewerk.

Styx and REO Speedwagon are two of the most commercially successful American rock bands from the late 70s and early 80s. The "REO Speedwagon / Styx Tour '09 Pack" will include three of Styx's biggest singles that were recently re-recorded, including "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" and "Renegade" originally featured on the band's eighth studio album Pieces of Eight (1978), plus "Too Much Time on My Hands" originally featured on the band's 1981 concept album Paradise Theatre, the band's highest charting album of all time. Also included in the 7-pack are REO Speedwagon's timeless classics "Ridin' the Storm Out," originally featured on the band's third album of the same name (1973), "Roll With the Changes," originally featured on the band's seventh studio album, You can Tune a Piano but You Can't Tuna Fish (1978) and "Take It on the Run," originally featured on the band's 9-times platinum 1980 album Hi Infidelity.

In its early days, the band built its reputation with its brand of Southern boogie and blues-rock before transforming into a more arena-rock-friendly style, selling millions of albums and garnering fans worldwide. Since 1975, the band has released more than 15 albums, most of which reached gold or platinum status. Among 38 Special's best-known songs are "Hold on Loosely," "Caught Up in You", "Second Chance", and "Rockin' into the Night". After more than three decades together, 38 Special is still playing more than 100 shows per year. And at every one of them, thousands of audience members are completely blindsided by the explosive power and muscle of the band's performance. "When we come out, people are like, Whoa! It's like a freight train rolling over them" says Barnes.

CAN'T STOP ROCKIN' is dedicated to raising awareness about hunger among American school children by partnering with "Blessings in a Backpack," a non-profit organization that provides weekend meals to school children in need. Bonnie Hunt has a talk show? The line between sitcom and talk show is really blurring these days. But I digress. REO Speedwagon will be on Bonnie`s new show in Friday. After a busy year that saw REO Speedwagon raise $270,000 for the Des Moines area for the "Ridin' The Storm Out Floods of 2008 Relief Concert", a concert in Trinidad with Rick Springfield and the release of the Soundstage DVD, the band will start wrapping up the year with the Bonnie Hunt Show appearance. They'll perform "Can't Fight This Feeling" and "Roll With The Changes". Other guests on the show include Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddy Rodriguez. REO Speedwagon released their first album in 1971 but it was the "Hi Infidelity" album that brought home the superannuation after selling more than 10 million copies in the USA. Bonnie's show started in September and screens on Warner Brothers Television. After starting her working life as a nurse, Bonnie changed careers and became a comedian. Her first show, 1995's The Bonnie Hunt Show, was a co-production with David Letterman. She was a screenwriter for the 2000 movie "Return To Me" starring David Duchovny and starred in the movies "Beethoven" and "Beethoven’s 2nd", "Jerry Maquire", "Jumanji" and "Cheaper By The Dozen". She was also the voice of Sally Carrera in "Cars". She will reprise that role in the sequel "Cars 2", not due until 2011.
